THE ORIGINS OF COFFEE
The origin of coffee starts in legend. The story of Kaldi, the Ethiopian goat herder from the 9th century who discovered how coffee can be used as a stimulant when he noticed how excitable his goats became after eating coffee beans that grew where he lived.
There is definite evidence of coffee drinking or knowledge of the coffee plant from the early 16th century in Yemen. It was here in Arabia where coffee beans were first roasted and brewed similarly to how it is done now.
It had reached the rest of the Middle East by the 16th century before spreading to Persia, Turkey, India and North Africa. Knowledge of coffee then spread throughout Europe and Asia – coffee was global!
